November
The clocks have gone back, and what a difference it makes! Every year there is discussion in the news about whether the practice should be abandoned, and every year we go on doing it. I never feel that the earlier light in the morning makes such a difference as the darker afternoons – though it can be cosy when you can draw the curtains at teatime. And we certainly notice the change when Spring comes, and suddenly the evenings are longer again, so maybe we should concentrate on looking forward!
In the meantime, we can look forward to the joys of this month, starting with our November Drop-in on Thursday November 7th, from 10.00am till 11.30am at Burnby Hall Community Centre. The new Pocklington Community Trust is now running the Centre, and it is good to know that the future of Burnby Hall seems assured for the benefit of our Pocklington community. There is a new website, www.burnbyhall.org.uk, where you can learn more about the new Trust and various ways you can get more involved.
Our musical performance groups are busily preparing for the Midwinter Music event on Monday December 2nd, which should be a joyful way to welcome December. Unfortunately, we have hit a snag – as some of you will know, the gallery at the Methodist Church is currently out of action, which will severely limit our audience numbers. It looks, disappointingly, as though we shall have to operate some kind of ticketing arrangement – free, of course, but just to control numbers. Details have not been decided yet, so if you are hoping to come, please watch out for a further email message.
We have recently been reviewing all our insurance arrangements – this is complicated when every one of our 67 groups has its own setup for meetings! If you are a Group Leader, you will be getting a message from our Treasurer, David, explaining how we need your help with this. I’m sure we all realise how necessary it is to make sure that all our various meetings are covered for every eventuality – even though, touch wood, we may not need to test it. It’s really important for us to know that we have ticked all the boxes on this, just in case.
November brings us All Saints Day, fireworks and Remembrance, as well as the usual crop of weird and wonderful celebration days – who’s heard of World Town Planning Day, or the International Day of Tolerance? (I can’t stand that one!). And of course, the 30th is St. Andrew’s Day, so a special greeting to all our members of Scottish heritage.
