Flaming June, eh? And all everyone seems to be saying is, “We could do with some rain”! It’s been called the gateway to summer – a nice positive thought.
Let’s hope there’s not too much of a downpour to welcome you to our Drop-in, at 10.00 a.m. on Thursday June 5th, at Burnby Hall Community Hall as usual. It is always good to greet old friends and welcome new members there – if you haven’t been for a while, why not come along?
Our AGM was held on the 22nd, at which we reviewed the past year and looked to the future. Many thanks to those who came to join us. We need and appreciate the support and feedback from members, so that we can be sure that your u3a is continuing to run with and for the benefit of all.
As from the AGM, there are some changes of Committee roles. We welcome Simon Eggleston as our new Chair; Simon has had a distinguished career in environmental and climate science, so it’s perhaps appropriate that he takes office in a month that includes World Environmental Day on the 5th, World Oceans Day on the 8th and Recycling Awareness Week from the 18th to the 24th. Les Smith who has been our excellent Chair for the past year is taking on a new role as Groups Co-ordinator, so you will still be hearing from him. Les gave an entertaining review of his year in office, awarding a number of imaginary medals to groups such as the jolliest, the quietest, the most argumentative and even the most horizontal! (That last was the Yoga Group)
There isn’t much news to share from our Groups this month – so many people seize the chance to go away on holiday before the schools break up! We are sad to note the loss of the Handbells Group, though members of the group will continue to meet on an informal basis.
A slightly unusual request has been received – is there anyone out there who has skills in beautiful italic or ornamental handwriting? One of our members is looking for someone to help with updating a family record document. If you could help, or know anyone who might be able to, please would you get in touch?
This is a short newsletter; the summer months are traditionally known as the “silly season” in the press. This is probably just due to the shortage of exciting news, though the fact that we have both National Beer Day and National Gin Day in June may be a contributing factor!
Let’s look forward to a summer to enjoy!
