March forward!
March! It may still feel wintry at the moment, but there are daffodils bursting forth along so many roadsides reminding us of Spring, and the promise of Easter is on the way.
Our Drop-in will be on Thursday, March 5th, from 10.00am until 11.45am at the Burnby Hall Community Centre as usual. We always look forward to meeting friends there, and are anticipating a good attendance as the annual Subs Renewals desks will be in action again to help you sign up for another year’s membership. It is a busy time, and both the careful work of the volunteers who staff the desks, and the patience and good nature of those who wait in line, are enormously appreciated. If you haven’t renewed for 2026 yet, this is a good opportunity; if you prefer to use one of the other payment methods, please do remember to send a message to Christina, the Membership Secretary, so that she can send you your card.
We are celebrating the arrival of spring with another disco. Places for our disco on Saturday 14 March have been in demand but there are still a few left and you can reserve yours by emailing Pauline “Dancing Queen” Slater: paulieslater@hotmail.co.uk It’s at Burnby Community Hall and it starts at 6.00pm.
As warmer and drier days approach, the Golf Group are getting ready for their first outing of the season to Tadcaster Golf Club (formerly Scarthingwell) on April 13th. The Group normally meets on the first Monday of each month for a bacon sandwich, coffee and a round of golf, playing affordable courses within easy travelling distance of Pocklington. The members vary in handicap ability and new members are always welcome to join in the competitive fun. There is no commitment to play every month and no charge for joining the Group. If you’re interested then please contact the Group Leader, John Pemberton, by email: u3agolf@btinternet.com.
Or if you like the outdoors but aren’t a golfer, what about a new group idea? Amble/Ramble will be starting on March 12th - a new group for short walks in and around Pocklington. It is proposed to meet at the Library, in Railway Street, Thursdays at 10a.m. (except for Drop-In Thursdays). In the case of inclement weather, members can plan and chat at a café. For further details please contact margaretstubbs2024@outlook.com.
I was surprised this week to hear u3a mentioned in The Archers! (Don’t judge me – it’s the only soap I follow, and a habit formed when listening with my grandmother is hard to break, however ludicrous the plots and characters become.) Although many of the principal characters are way over retirement age, they seemed never to have heard of the u3a until landowner Brian announced that the “University of the Third Age” would be holding an organised walk over the rewilding trail. What next, eh? U3a pub lunch at the Rovers’ Return, or a crafting session in Albert Square?
The usual plethora of special days, from the traditional to the bizarre, are on the calendar for March. I doubt that either Barbie Day or Super Mario Day will be of much interest to u3a members, but we can enjoy World Wildlife Day on the 3rd, World Book Day on the 5th and Women’s Day on the 8th. It’s St. David’s Day on the 1st, and St. Patrick’s on the 17th, so greetings to all members with Welsh or Irish roots. You can use up your leftover leeks from St. David’s Day in Pie Week, and then mark the Equinox on the 20th with enjoying Red Nose Day.
Enjoy the Spring awakening, and have a good month!
